Concurrent Workshop 3e: Design and Conquer: A Method of Teaching Splint Pattern Making and Splint Critiquing — YRD

Chair: Judith Elliott

Presenter: Judy Elliot

Splinting for those who have had little or no experience is often a challenging prospect, beginning with pattern design and ending with analysing the moulded product to determine if it is fit for purpose. Understanding how a 2D shape translates to a 3D one does not come easily for everyone. This workshop will teach a simple method of splint pattern making. Therapists will be encouraged to master the principles of 2 splint patterns which are then built on to design most other hand splints. The goal is to ensure that the pattern fits the hand so that there is minimal forced distortion of the plastic during the moulding phase and hence less room for error and more time to focus on the specific positioning of the hand.
