The 1st CMCJ is an inherently unstable joint with excessive mobility. This has allowed for the evolution of mankind!. Stability at the 1st CMC joint is attributed to a number of key thenar stabilising muscles. Ligament laxity can be the precursor to early degenerative changes in the 1st CMCJ. Evidence suggests that specific exercises aimed at restoring dynamic stability of the 1st CMCJ can offer an effective form of conservative management for pain and weakness associated with both early and late stage Osteoarthritis or thumb hypermobility, having the potential to delay or reduce the need for surgical intervention. This is a hands on workshop that reviews the relevant anatomy of the thumb and introduces therapists to this stabilisation exercise program.
